A substantial 18-carat gold brooch decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds and two large peridots by the Norwegian designer Oivind Modahl (1916-1981). He pioneered the trend for artist jewellers to make truly unique pieces. Very few were sold outside his home country, so it's a delight to come across his work. In 1953 he opened his workshop in Oslo and this piece is signed on the back 'Oivind Modahl Oslo'. He is relatively unknown outside of Norway but was featured in the book "New Design in Jewelry" by Donald J Willcox (New York 1970).  The background has a textured finish with the raised gold detail polished. Circa 1960-70.
